Herbalist gets 20 years IHL for raping two women
Zomba Magistrate’s Court on Friday sentenced herbalist Jackson Simoko to 20 years imprisonment with hard labour for raping and indecently assaulting two women.
The offences are contrary to sections 133 and 137 of the Penal Code
Police records show that on May 24 this year, two women aged 20 and 24 years went to Simoko’s place at Six Miles in the district to procure love charms but they ended up being raped and assaulted by the traditional healer.
“Simoko told the women that he would draw tattoos on their body parts including their private parts. They were told to enter into a private room one after another. The first victim entered and she was undressed and marks of a tattoo were made on her body including private parts.
“When the second victim entered the room she was given some watery concoction and became unconscious. After coming to her senses, Simoko told her to go and throw a razor blade that was used into a toilet and that’s where she realised she was raped and reported the matter to police,” Zomba police spokesperson, Patricia Sipiliano, said.
Zomba Central Hospital confirmed that the second vict im was raped and police arrested Simoko who pleaded not guilty when he appeared before the senior magistrate’s court.
“But after parading four witnesses, he was found guilty. In mitigation, he asked the court to be lenient as he is a first offender and his wife is epileptic. However, magistrate Wyson Nkhata told him that he was supposed to consider his responsibilities before committing the offence. The magistrate told Simoko that the offence is a serious one but being a first offender he should go to prison and serve eight years for indecent assault and 12 years for rape,” Sipiliano said.
Simoko hails from Kumbewa Village in the area of Traditional Authority Chikowi in the district.
