Hockey lovers in Blantyre have every reason to smile as their favourite game returns after over a year’s absence due to restrictions that the government imposed to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

The game is back with a National Open tournament at the National Hockey Stadium in Blantyre from tomorrow up to Sunday.

Hockey Association of Malawi Marketing and Media Chairperson Ivy Kawaza said the tournament would also serve as a launching event for the country’s first-ever hockey turf.

“We are excited to announce the return of our beloved game of hockey after close to two years of inactivity. We have opened this competition to every team so that we celebrate our return to the pitch. We missed the game and it will be exciting to see the reunion of the country’s hockey family,” Kawaza said.

She said the tournament would have both men’s and ladies’ teams, with winners receiving medals and trophies.

“There are no cash prizes for winners because we do not have any sponsor. This is an event whose main aim is announcing that we are back in business after suspending competitions because of Covid,” Kawaza said.

The tournament has nine men’s and four ladies’ teams with Moyale (men’s) being the only team from Northern Region.

Central Region has Capital Braves and Luanar Bunda Sticks in the men’s category.

Nyala, Cobbe Sticks, Genetrix Veterans, Scorpions and Braves will represent Southern Region in the men’s category while Nyala, Genetrix, Scorpions and Braves will lock horns in an all-Southern Region affair.
