Hockey Association of Malawi president no more

A dark cloud has fallen on the country’s sports sector with the death of Hockey Association of Malawi President, Tochi Gill.

The association’s General Secretary, Fiwa Bunda, said Gill died on Saturday morning in India where he went for medical treatment.

Bunda said the news has shocked the entire hockey fraternity as Gill was a dedicated administrator of the game.

“We are lost for words. We cannot say much for now. We will call for a briefing later to express our deepest sorrow on losing our president and what we will do to pay homage to his legacy,” Bunda said.

He said Gill will be buried in India, according to information from the deceased’s relatives.

Malawi National Council of Sports Administration Manager, Henry Mereka, said the loss of Gill is a tragedy to the country’s sports fraternity.

“He was a good sports administrator. We have lost people in the sports fraternity but Gill was an exceptional character. He is someone who had the interest of hockey at heart from way back in the 1980s,” Mereka said.

Malawi Olympic Committee President, Oscar Kanjala, could also not hide his sorrow.

Kanjala said he will also miss Gill, not just in the sports circles, but also as a friend.

“You cannot talk of hockey in the country without the mention of Gill. Here is someone who sacrificed not only his resources towards the game, but also his time. Gill could be seen planting kapinga [grass] at the stadium just to make sure that hockey has a good playing surface. So his death is a great shock,” Kanjala said.

Gill has served Ham for four years and was into his second term after being re-elected unopposed last year in December.
