Hockey coach appointed

As a way of reviving Malawi National Hockey Team, Hockey Association of Malawi (Ham) has appointed a head coach and his assistant.

Ham General Secretary, Chigo Thindwa, said on Monday that the decision was in line with their strategic plan to ensure that Malawi participates in international competitions.

“As per our constitution, Ham Board as the appointing body, convened on September 22 2016 and appointed Geoffrey Biya as the National Coach and Allan Pinheiro as the National Assistant Coach,” Thindwa said.

The newly-appointed coaches have the task of preparing a men’s national side to participate in Africa President’s Cup in March 2017 in Lusaka, Zambia.

The cup is open to men’s and women’s teams ranked eighth and below in Africa.

“Whoever shall win this tournament in the men’s and women’s competition, will qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations the same year. There are seven countries that qualify automatically namely Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa and Zimbabwe,” he added.

Biya, who is also coach for Genetrix Hockey Team, welcomed the appointment, saying he was ready for the task.

“I believe it is God’s time. It is a big task. However, the task needs the support from all stakeholders in the hockey fraternity, since it has been 17 years of our absence in international competitions. We need thorough training so that we can improve our fitness, coordination and style of play,” he said.

The new coach said he will draw up a programme before commencing training.

“The players will be selected based on their performance, dedication and discipline. We need players who can fight and are ready to die for their country’s team,” he concluded.
