Malawi Hockey National Team Coach, Geoffrey Biya, is determined to make history at the forthcoming President’s Cup in Arusha, Tanzania.
“I want to be the first coach to make Malawi qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations to be hosted by Egypt in September this year,” Biya said ahead of the cup to run from February 22 to 26 at Twiga Club.
Biya’s dream might be far-fetched as Malawi, who are in the same group with Tanzania, Zambia and Uganda, lack international exposure.
But the coach is determined to realise his goal.
“I have no fear for any team. I think personally, Malawi stands a chance to win. After 19 years of absence, we cannot go there for shopping,” Biya insisted.
The team has been training in Blantyre for some weeks and the coach is happy with the progress.
“The concentration is now on finishing power. On defensive pattern, all is well but finishing power is lacking,” Biya admitted.
Team Manager, Kundai Mbawala, said despite challenges that almost prevented the trip, all was set for departure by road on February 15.
“The players are in good shape and are determined to represent Malawi well at the tournament,” Mbawala told the media.
