Hospitals, airports to have free Wi-fi
The Public Private Partnership Commission (PPPC) has embarked on a project which will see eight public hospitals and the country’s airports having free Wi-fi services by March next year.
Targeted institutions include the country’s four referral hospitals.
This is under the $72 million World Bank-funded Digital Malawi Project.
PPPC Digital Technology Specialist, Victor Funsani, said public Wi-fi is the second component of the project.
“Component number two of this project is digital connectivity but we have a sub-component which is universal service fund and will be running in conjunction with Macra,” Funsani said.
ICT Association of Malawi vice-president, Edmond Kachale welcomed the move.
“The initiative has been welcomed by the association as it will revolutionise how we do things in Malawi.
“However, we would like the commission to reconsider the pilot locations, for instance, installing Wi-fi in secondary schools may not be a good idea because the Ministry of Education does not allow students to bring mobile devices to school,” Kachale said.
The project is aimed at improving digital ecosystem to improve digital connectivity in public institutions.
It is expected to influence establishment of digital legislation and amendment of the Cyber Security Act of 2016.
