Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB)’s acting Director General, Reyneck Matemba, Tuesday appeared before the Parliamentary Appointments Committee (Pac) for his confirmation hearing at Parliament Building in Lilongwe.

President Peter Mutharika appointed Matemba as ACB acting Director General in October 2017 following the exit of Lucas Kondowe, whose contract expired the same month. Matemba’s contract as Deputy Director of the bureau also expired in November 2017.

In an interview immediately after the hearing, Matemba said, if successful, he is ready to head the bureau.

“If I am confirmed, for me it will be a continuation of what we have been doing. We might have to change the approach. I know the Bureau in and out. I know where we are doing well and where we are not. So it all depends on Pac that in the event that they are going to confirm me, I know where to start from,” Matemba said

If confirmed, Matemba’s major task is to make sure that he concludes the George Chaponda and Transglobe case in which the two are being accused of corruption in relation to the procurement of maize from Zambia.

He also has to oversee the investigation of Issa Njauju, a senior ACB officer who was brutally murdered two years ago. Scotland Yard is in the process of helping with investigations to find Njauju’s killers.

Pac Chairperson, Lingson Belekanyama, described the interview as a “good interaction”.

“Our interaction has been so good. We saw that he has the experience with the bureau and it was very interesting,” he said

Belekanyama said the committee would make a final decision by tomorrow this week and the results would be sent to the Office of the President and Cabinet.

The committee yesterday also interviewed General Secretary for Blantyre CCAP Synod, Reverend Alex Maulana, on the position of Board Chairperson of Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority.

He is the first person appointed to the position who has appeared before the committee following a review of the Communications Act.

Maulana said, if confirmed, he is ready for the task.
