Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has accused Malawi Police Service (MPs) of delaying the natural course of justice over Msundwe sexual abuse allegations involving some police officers.
HRDC Central Region Chairperson, Billy Mayaya, was reacting to a statement which MPS released that full criminal investigations into the alleged cases of sexual abuse by police officers at Msundwe, M’bwatalika and Mpingu areas in Lilongwe was at an advanced stage.
Mayaya said the police should have started looking into the findings and recommendations of Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) report.
“The police are deliberately stalling the process to avoid transparency and accountability by releasing this press release. It is a clear attempt to stall the process and delay the course of justice,” Mayaya said
He said HRDC expects the officers that were mentioned in the report to be suspended.
In the statement, MPS spokesperson, James Kadadzera, said police management was confident that the investigations will be conducted in a professional manner and without bias.
He said the police investigations were paying due attention to MHRC report.
Recently, Inspector General of Police, Duncan Mwapasa, outlined what the police will do in order to bring the culprits to book.
Recently, the government spokesperson, Mark Botomani, discredited the findings of MHRC.
In October 2019, some people in police uniform officers raided M’bwatalika, Mpingu, Kadzoyo and Msundwe where they allegedly defiled, raped and tortured some women and girls.
