HRDC calls for strong democratic institutions

Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has appealed to the government to strengthen democratic institutions by allocating adequate funds to them.
The coalition said this Wednesday, when Malawi commemorated International Day of Democracy, which falls on September 15 every year.
“Fund institutions such as the Anti-Corruption Bureau, Office of the Ombudsman, the Judiciary and the Malawi Electoral Commission, among others,” said HRDC Chairperson Gift Trapence.
Treasury spokesperson Williams Banda said they had taken note of the concerns.
He, however, said, for now, there was nothing that could be done since the national budget had already been passed.
“Otherwise, we will make sure that the institutions implement their activities without having a shortfall,” Banda said.
