Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has described the demonstrations they have organised so far in Lilongwe as successful.
Unlike Tuesday’s protests which were marred by clashes between police officers and protesters, Wednesday’s protests, characterised by heavy presence of Malawi Defence Force (MDF) soldiers, were peaceful.
Speaking at the end of the second day of the protests, HRDC Vice Chairperson, Gift Trapence, said for the first time since the protests started in June, Wednesday’s demonstrations were peaceful.
“This is the first time for HRDC to hold peaceful demonstrations; no teargas was fired to protesters because we did not involve the police. We did not involve the police deliberately because Malawians no longer trust them when it comes to protests. We trust MDF soldiers as they are professional,”Trapence said.
Yesterday, HRDC continued with the call for parliamentarians not to confirm Duncan Mwapasa as Inspector General of Malawi Police Service.
Meanwhile, HRDC Chairperson, Timothy Mtambo, has condemned unknown people who are taking advantage of the protests to wreak havoc.
HRDC Has been organising demonstrations aimed at forcing Malawi Electoral Commission Chairperson, Justice Jane Ansah and all commissioners to resign for allegedly messing up the May 21 presidential elections results.
