Human Rights Consultative Committee hails dissolution of Unima Council

The Malawi Human Rights Consultative Committee (HRCC) has hailed President Peter Mutharika’s move o f dissolving the Council for the University of Malawi (Unima) for failing to address labour disputes between lecturers and the Council.

In an interview, HRCC Chairperson, Robert Mkwezalamba, said HRCC is convinced that a new council will approach the matter with great sobriety.

He said the ministries of Education and Finance should work with the new council in order to address the challenges that the Unima Council meets while executing its duties.

“Mutharika’s decision to dissolve the Unima Council for failing to address matters which have greatly exposed the leadership and the country in so far as respect for higher education is concerned is a step forward. HRCC is hopeful that with this move, a settlement can be attained shortly.

“Unima staff should facilitate their return to class as a matter of necessity while giving dialogue a chance. Organs of government should also use this as a lesson against indecisiveness on duty bearers,” he said.
