Hyena attacks four people in Kasungu

A marauding hyena suspected to have escaped from Kasungu National Park has seriously injured a 16-year-old girl, her mother and two other men.

Kasungu Police Spokesperson, Edna Mzingwitsa, said the girl (name withheld) is admitted to Mchinji District Hospital while the other three are admitted to Kasungu District Hospital.

However, Kasungu National Park Manager, Dixy Makwale, said he was not aware of the matter and asked for more time to find out if indeed the hyena was from the park.

But according to Mzingwitsa, the four people were attacked on Monday, at around 6am at Longwe Village in the area of Chief Santhe in the district.

“The girl in the company of her mother was in the garden planting sweet potatoes. While there, a vicious hyena attacked her and she sustained serious injuries on various parts of her body. She is receiving treatment at Mchinji District Hospital,” said Mzingwitsa.

The police spokesperson said the hyena also attacked the mother before injuring two men who were trying to kill it.

The three are admitted to Kasungu District Hospital but the villagers killed the hyena.

In a related development, an angry mob from Chamkoma Village in the area of Chief Santhe in Kasungu has killed a 28-year-old man identified as Chimwemwe Jimmu on allegations that he stole tobacco.

According to Mzingwitsa, the deceased on the night of Sunday went to the tobacco shed of Noah Phiri to steal tobacco.

She said after noting that there was a thief at the shed, Phiri shouted for help and immediately villagers caught him and assaulted him to death. Postmortem results revealed that Jimmu died due internal bleeding.
