Former minister of Youth and Sports Ulemu Msungama has said he is not disappointed that he has been relieved of his duties while at the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals in Cameroon.

President Lazarus Chakwera dissolved the Cabinet on Monday night after disclosing that a new Cabinet will be announced within two days.

In reaction to the development, Msungama said it was an honour to serve as Sports minister for close to two years.

“It is the President’s prerogative to appoint ministers. However, to be honest, when I heard the news, the feeling was not the same but I am ok. I am preparing to return to Malawi on the next available flight,” Msungama said.

Msungama, who was leading the Malawi delegation in Cameroon, was Tuesday expected to watch the Round of 16 tie between Flames and Morocco in Yaoundé.

The Malawi Congress Party Lilongwe City South East parliamentarian was appointed as first sports minister in the Tonse-led administration in July 2020.

Sports analyst George Kaudza-Masina said it was time to reflect on what Msungama achieved during his tenure.

“Honestly, I do not know what he has done for the past 18 months. He might get a second chance because there were few sporting activities in his first year due to the Covid pandemic,” he said.

There is no guarantee that Msungama alongside fellow former ministers will be retained.

Msungama is the current chairperson of Africa Union Region 5 Sports Council as the country is expected to host the Games in December this year.
