I don’t have political ambitions—Bushiri

Business came to a standstill in the interior of Mzuzu City on Tuesday when self-acclaimed Prophet Shepherd Bushiri made a surprise appearance where he later said in an interview that he does not hold any political ambitions as other people claim.

Hundreds of people left their business places and offices and followed Bushiri’s five-car motorcade as he stopped in the city for some transactions.

Bushiri told The Daily Times that people continue to link him to politics because of the influence he has on issues of national interest as a “servant of God”.

He then admitted that he continues to suffer politically motivated persecution from various corners in the country because people fear for their political positions.

“Jesus was killed because Herod was afraid, he thought that he wanted to be king all because of the crowd-pulling and the impact of his [Jesus’s] presence. So it is not quite strange for me because it is in the Bible. People always link influence with politics,” Bushiri explained.

Commenting on the economic hardships that Malawians are going through, the South African-based preacher said it is due to loss of mutual respect between political leaders and their subjects.

He further denounced the spirit of jealousy among Malawians which he said is retrogressive to development.

“Malawians have lost respect for their leaders and so has the leadership on its people, should we work on that everything shall change in our country. Further to that let’s deal with the spirit of jealousy amongst us. We should learn to support each other,” he explained.

Asked on the purpose of the trip, the Mzuzu-raised preacher said he is in the country to preach especially in rural areas.

“I was at Mponela and Madisi, I am heading to Euthini and I will finish off with NKhata Bay,” he disclosed.
