Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) spokesperson Shadric Namalomba has said he will not apologise to the Kalani Thom Mutharika family over a statement which party president Peter Mutharika made.
The former president distanced himself from the family, describing its members as imposters.
In a statement issued last week, the DPP leader indicated that his clan was dismayed to learn that they had a sibling by the name of Kalani Thom Mutharika.
In response, the Thom Mutharika family, in a statement released on Monday, asked Namalomba to apologise for what was written in the statement.
It said the allegations made against the family were serious.
Speaking on behalf of the Thom Mutharika family, Joseph Mutharika said Namalomba was not the right person to issue a statement indicating that their family was not related to Peter Mutharika.
“In the first place, Mr Namalomba is not the family spokesperson and, so, why is he meddling in family matters? What we are saying is that we are not forcing ourselves to be related to the former president because we do not want to get anything from him. We are just saying how things are.
“So if Namalomba is not apologising, as we have said in the statement, we will meet in court,” Mutharika said.
The issue came to the limelight after DPP vice president for the Southern Region Kondwani Nankhumwa cheered ailing Kalani Thom Mutharika at his home in Chiradzulu District. Pictures of the visit went viral on social media, prompting the DPP to clarify that Mutharika had no sibling by the name of Kalani Thom Mutharika.
The statement said Peter Mutharika’s family had six children; Bingu, Ida, Peter, Lizzie, Jinnie and Christina—who survived into adulthood.
Meanwhile, Namalomba has put his foot down on the issue of apologising over the issue.
“I have seen the letter circulating in social media platforms. I should tell the family that they are addressing a wrong person because we released the statement as a party siding with our president Peter Mutharika and not me as an individual. So if they are singling me out, they are just doing this out of ignorance,”
“And, also, let me tell them that, in the statement, we just gave facts in regards to the Mutharika clan. So, if they claim that they are Peter Mutharika’s relations, let them provide evidence and I will apologise when I see the evidence,” Namalomba said.
