I will not contest again, says Mvona

Sambaligwa Mvona has served Malawi Writers Union (Mawu) for years as President an issue that earned him accusation from some members of clinging to power.

But Mvona is finally bowing out to pave way for new blood following the expiry of his mandate in July this year.

“My mandate ended in July after serving four years as president. I am just waiting for handover once the new president is elected. I have done my part and I will not contest again,” Mvona said Wednesday.

He said Mawu will hold an elective Annual General Meeting (AGM) next month.

“The budget is K2 million to hold the AGM but the challenge is funds. But members have agreed to contribute and if we can have K1.5 million then everything is okay. We will just make sure that we handover everything properly and then elections should be held in a free and fair manner,” Mvona said.

The veteran writer insisted that he is not contesting again and that a taskforce has been set up to look into raising funds for the AGM.

“For those contesting for various positions including president, the deadline in submitting their names is October 31 2020,” Mvona said.

Meanwhile, the taskforce has indicated that the AGM will be held on November 28 in Lilongwe.

The taskforce has also said the budget for the AGM is K5 million.

“The main objective is to among others, elect new office bearers to lead Mawu for the next four years. Over 50 writers from across the country are expected to attend. The budget for this elective conference is pegged at K5 million and so, we are asking for financial assistance,” one of the members, who did not want to be named said Wednesday.

Secretary for the task force Charles Chisi, confirmed of the development but could not shed more details on the AGM.
