Malawi national football team left back, Ian Chinyama, will be out of action for six weeks after undergoing a successful operation on Wednesday at Fern Crest Hospital in South Africa.

On his debut on Tuesday, the Premier Bet Wizards’ defender broke his facial bones after colliding with a striker for Mauritius at the ongoing Cosafa Castle Cup.

Francis Mlimbika replaced Chinyama when Malawi drew 0-0 against Mauritius at Royal Bafokeng Stadium.

The Flames Team Manager, James Sangala, said Chinyama was complaining of pain around his right eye, adding that scans revealed that he had three fractures.

“We have been advised that he should rest for at least six weeks. It is a blow to both the nation and the player. However, we are confident that he will bounce back soon and strongly,” he said.

Chinyama was equally optimistic of a quick recovery.

“I am now feeling better and I am sure that I will be back in action soon,” he said.

Chinyama was given a rare start on Tuesday after the Flames Coach, Ronny van Geneudgen, reshuffled his squad following Malawi’s dismal start, losing 2-0 to Tanzania on Sunday.
