The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Malawi (Icam) on Saturday presented awards of excellence to 31 students who sparkled during the June 2019 accounting examinations.
Icam Chief Executive Officer, Francis Gondwe, said the awards were designed to encourage the students to work hard in class.
Gondwe said, unlike the general belief that Icam examinations are hard, the results have shown that most students are doing well.
“Those who are working hard are passing with flying colours, with some even scoring as high as 98 percent in some papers.
“The problem is that most students would like to pass without putting in the necessary effort,” Gondwe said.
He said Icam were in the process of according scholarships to best performing students.
“The moment all the nitty-gritties have been worked out, the information and criteria will be made available to all students. The accountancy profession is for the bright and best cream of students,” Gondwe said.
The awards saw Pact College scooping 12 out of the 31 accolades presented.
Pact College Director, Ishmael Chipala, attributed the performance to highly qualified and dedicated members of staff.
“We, as a college, are very careful when recruiting lecturers. We don’t just pick any other lecturer to teach our students.
“In addition, we make sure that we provide a conducive environment for learning,” Chipala said.
Icam also awarded Lilongwe-based student Keston Mvukuta for completing the accounting technician diploma in the shortest period of two sittings.
Icam Examinations Committee Chairperson, Samuel Yakobe, said it was worrying that the number of students registering for Icam courses was declining.
The institute is rolling out initiatives that are meant to contain the situation and eventually see more people registering to pursue courses.
