ICAM equips business journalists

The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Malawi (ICAM) says the media has a pivotal role of ensuring sustainable economic development and recovery from the woes currently facing the country.

ICAM vice president Henry Chowawa made the call on Saturday during a day long training workshop the institute organised in collaboration with the Media Institute of Southern Africa – Malawi Chapter (Misa Malawi) for business and economic journalists of the country.

At the training, ICAM also announcement an increase in the sponsorship for the Hennox Mazengera Financial Reporting Awards under Misa Malawi’s annual World Press Freedom Day Celebrations awards to K1.5 million from K1.2 million.

The award was introduced in 2015 in honour of the first chief executive officer for ICAM, then known as Society of Accountants in Malawi (Socam), late Hennox Mazengera who had passion for the media and among other things introduced the Socam Award for business journalists in Malawi.

Chowawa said ICAM trusts that the award will contribute to encouraging journalists to take interest and develop their skills in financial reporting.

On his part, Misa Malawi chairperson Thom Khanje commended ICAM for the support and pleaded with fellow journalists to write business stories that can contribute to the economic development of the country.

“This award is important in the improvement of business journalism in Malawi,” said Khanje.
