The winner of this year’s national ICT innovation award, will have a chance to brush shoulders with innovators from the Commonwealth in Rwanda.
ICT Association of Malawi (Ictam) last year inaugurated the innovation awards, but it was limited to the local industry.
Addressing journalists in Blantyre, Ictam president, Wisely Phiri, said the association has partnered with the Commonwealth, to have the winner represent Malawi during the 2018 Commonwealth ICT Application Forum in Rwanda.
“The event this year has gone to a completely new level, as we will be collaborating with other regional players to promote the innovation within the African region.
“We want our innovators to showcase their capabilities to the world, so that Malawi also gets known for its innovations,” he said.
Phiri said Malawi has skilled and talented innovators but they lack exposure.
“As an industry, we would want to export skilled labour that will benefit the country in foreign exchange. The demand is there for ICT players, but we need to create a platform of showcasing our work and expose our innovators to the world,” Phiri said.
The association is currently calling for submission of concept papers for this year’s awards.
“We noted during the inauguration period that we did not give enough time for the participating teams and the judging panel to have more time to review all entries hence calling for submission earlier this year to allow for more time for the coaching of the participants.
“The closing date for the submission of the entries is September 22, 2017, and the over-all winners are going to be announced at the National Innovation Forum event due to take place in October in Mangochi,” Phiri said, adding that concept papers should be submitted to email@example.com.
This year’s categories include agriculture, education and training, gender, youth and vulnerable groups, health care delivery, water and sanitation, environment, wholesale and retail trade, tourism and manufacturing, among others.
The National ICT Innovation Forum is an annual event that creates a platform through which innovation and science is showcased and promoted in Malawi.
The forum also brings together local ICT innovation experts to demonstrate some of their work and be recognized
