Illovo drive reduces workplace injuries

Dwangwa estates, under Illovo Sugar said they have managed to reduce workplace injuries at their factory and agriculture section during the year.

The company said during last season, factory injuries were reduced to 4 and no injuries were recorded in the agriculture section.

Last week, Dwangwa was commemorating the World Day for Safety and Health at workplace, a day declared by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) to promote the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases globally.

Speaking during the commemoration, Dwangwa Estate General Manager LalBachan said safety and health is something that can be manageable and controlled.

Bachan said since the estate started commemorating the day in 2011, workplace accidents have reduced because of the awareness.

“Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) is a cross-disciplinary area concerned with protecting the safety, health and welfare of people engaged in work or employment,” he said.

Bachan said the goals of occupational safety and health programs include fostering a safe and healthy work environment.

In her remarks Ethanol Company Limited General Manager LusubiloChakaniza said Ethico has for a long time been implementing an occupation health and safety management system of international standard that helped them to reduce accidents.

The commemoration was organised jointly with Unitrans, Dwangwa Cane Growers, Ethico and Nkhanga.
