Illovo hands over maize to Nkhotakota communities

Illovo Sugar Malawi on Friday handed over 150 metric tons of maize grown at its Dwangwa estate for distribution to more than 3,000 households from six traditional authorities in Nkhotakota district.

The company also donated 100 bags of maize to Nkhotakota District Hospital.

Illovo human resources manager Chrispin Chikwama said the maize growing project by the company was in response to the government’s plea in requesting the private and public sector to assist in hunger alleviation.

Chikwama said Illovo works with communities that surround its estates hence meeting the needs of the communities through corporate social responsibility.

“We are targeting to harvest 150 metric tons of maize which will be distributed straight to the beneficiaries after harvesting. The whole project has seen the company spending about K25 million,” he said.

He further said Nchalo-a sister estate to Dwangwa is also growing maize for the same cause.

“The Nchalo maize will be distributed to communities in Chikwawa and Illovo expects to harvest about 120 tons,” said Chikwama.

Traditional authority Malengchanzi asked the company to extend its good gesture to Nkhotakota Prison which is also facing food problems.

He said the maize distribution will address food challenges faced by communities in the district.
