Illovo in HIV/Aids open day

Illovo Sugar Limited on Saturday organised an open day for HIV and Aids awareness within the workplace and surrounding communities at its Nchalo Estate in Chikwawa district.

The event was orgainsed jointly by Illovo and its main transport contractor Unitrans and was held at Chimbiya Primary school.

Speaking at the event, Illovo Nchalo medical officer, Albert Mkumbwa, said a health workforce is the one that delivers in terms of productivity.

He said it was important for Illovo to engage its employees in HIV and Aids awareness.

“Today marks the climax of the HIV and Aids awareness week we had. As a company we saw it important to sensitise our employees on the dangers of the pandemic and how to prevent it,” said Mkumbwa.

“As you are aware, the nature of our job here is labour intensive and we need health workers for us to produce positive results,” said Mkumbwa.

On his part, Unitrans depot manager, Thian Myburgh – who was the guest of honour at the event, said companies should come forward and support the HIV and Aids sensitisations.

He said by working jointly, a lot can be achieved by reducing deaths caused by the pandemic.

“We need to come together and help our employees understand the dangers of the disease. It is only a health nation that can grow economically,” said Myburgh.
