Illovo Malawi launches K75 million Covid project

KATANDULA—Covid posses a detrimental risk to lives

Illovo Sugar (Malawi) has set aside K75 million to be channeled towards Covid pandemic fight in Dwangwa and Nchalo through what it calls community intervention project.

Through the project, the company will engage stakeholders in communities to understand misconceptions over Covid preventive measures.

The initiative also intends to help towards research on reasons behind low uptake of Covid vaccination among community members.

In a statement, Illovo Sugar Malawi Managing Director Lekani Katandula said the business is motivated to contribute towards a healthy community.

“We, as a business, believe that for us to succeed, we need the communities we operate in to be safe and healthy. Covid poses a detrimental risk to the lives of not only our employees and their families, but also the communities around us,” Katandula said.

The project is targeting all Illovo Sugar estate villages, surrounding communities and the grower community.

The communities include Dyeratu, Maseya, Bereu, Thomu, Nchalo7, Ngabu, Malayini, Miseufolo, Paiva, Sekeni and Kasinthula in Chikhwawa.

While in Dwangwa the activity will take place within Dwangwa Estate, DCGL Village, Chisita, Mowe Village, Vitekete Dwangwa TC, Nkhunga, Mtupi, Liwaladzi, Dema, Banga, Walemera, Ngala and Kasitu.

The company has enlisted the help of Care Malawi to provide technical support towards execution of the project.
