Illovo Mphamvu race sponsorship increased

Illovo Sugar has increased this year’s sponsorship for Illovo Mphamvu Cycling race from K4 million to K6 million.

The company announced the increase at its headquarters in Limbe, Blantyre on Wednesday.

Previously known as the Illovo Classic race, this year’s event will wear the new Illovo Mphamvu tag in line with the company’s 50th anniversary celebrations.

Illovo Sugar General Manager- Commercial, Walter Nyamilandu, said they were determined to enrich the lives of Malawians.

“This is exactly why we recently launched the new brand and new packet sizes. But it does not end there for us; we intend to do so in all aspects of our brand engagements,” he said.

“This is exactly why going forward this race will now be called the Illovo Mphamvu Cycling race. And as a show of good faith to our committed partners, the Blantyre Cycling Club, we are also increasing the level of sponsorship for the event. This will cover all costs of the race, including prizes.”

Nyamilandu also said they had increased the prize money for female cyclists.

Blantyre Cycling Club President, Dyton Chimwaza, hailed Illovo for the continued support.

He said winners will receive K120,000 each plus other incentives that go up to K1 million.

“This year’s race is also special because riders will first take porridge with sugar to boost their energy levels,” he said.

Steve Nazombe-Manyenje is the defending champion of the 115km race.

He first won the race in 2014 when he clocked 2:59:03, before defending the championship last year when he failed to beat the time he set after posting 3:59:00.
