Sugar producer, Illovo Sugar Malawi Limited has called for joint efforts between business entities and health sector to alleviate the plight of people with cleft lips, palates and facial deformities.

Reports indicate that while such cases are on the rise in Malawi, little is done to provide material and financial support to health organisations and government to help those affected.

Illovo Malawi Employees Benefits Manager, Benadetta Yafete, made the call Wednesday when the company donated 23 bales of sugar to Operation Smile—a charity organisation— which provides surgery to persons with cleft lips and palates.

Operation Smile is present in Malawi and other 60 countries providing medical care and training to health officers.

“We hope that the donation, we will reach out the vulnerable through Operation Smile,” Yafete said.

In his remarks, Operation Smile Country Manager, Ibrahim Nthalika, hailed Illovo for the gesture.

“We provide these services for free and within the same context, patients and their guardians need to eat, and this sugar will solve the nutrition challenges,” Nthalika explained.

He said since its establishment in Malawi in 2012, the organisation has provided free surgery to 723 Malawians.

“These medical programmes have also helped 314 health care professionals in Malawi and 220,000 free surgical procedures on children globally,” he said.
