Illovo Sugar Malawi has launched a new 90 gram sachet of sugar called Sugar Mtape, which will be sold at K150.
The ‘Shuga Mtape’ scheme was introduced to promote hygiene and ensure wider access of the commodity by Malawians.
Speaking during the official launch at Nyambadwe Ground in Blantyre, Illovo Sugar Malawi Managing Director Lekani Katandula said the company has invested over K5 million in the installation of a new packing plant in Chiwembe, Blantyre.
“It is clear that people who use our sugar would like to buy sugar at lower prices, hence the initiative” he said.
Katandula said the initiative would also help small-scale sugar traders remain in business.
Principal Secretary responsible for SME’s in the Ministry of Trade Francis Zhuwao commended Illovo for the initiative.
He said the move would help people buy hygienically-packed sugar while giving an opportunity to everyone to afford the commodity.
