Immigration intercepts cocaine at Chileka Airport

The Immigration Department Monday intercepted 14 packets of cocaine from a Venezuelan national, Marina Benitez, 35, who landed at Chileka International Airport at 14:30pm on Ethiopian Airlines.

Immigration spokes person for Chileka International Airport, Chilungamo Kapulula, said Benitez demonstrated suspicious behaviour after landing at the airport and the Immigration detained her.

“She could not speak English. She had no host and clearance to get visa letter in Malawi. She said she was going to Mozambique and her return ticket showed she was going to South Africa. When we searched her, we found 14 small plastic bags of cocaine. We handed her over to police,” said Kapulula.

He said the weight and cost of the cocaine was not yet established.

Kapulula said Benitez would be deported today and issued with a Prohibited Immigrant status in accordance with Section 23 of the Immigration Act.

Kapulula said the status means that Benitez will never be allowed to come back to Malawi.
