Immigration tightens security to block Zodwa

By Wezzie Gausi:

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services has ordered tight security in all the country’s borders to block South African controversial dancer Zodwa Wabantu from entering the country.

The order comes following defiance of host Myuziki Pusha Entertainment, who announced that Zodwa will attend the Winter Amapiano Vibez show as a visitor at Dominics in Blantyre on Saturday despite Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Wildlife through Censorship Board not granting an Entertainment permit, as is the norm, to the artist, saying she undresses on stage and this was guided by the provisions of the Censorship and Control of Entertainment Act.

Immigration in a statement signed by Pudensiana Makalamba on behalf of the Director General, calls on all officers in all the country’s entry points to ensure that Zodwa does not enter Malawi.

“As a Department, we cannot allow someone that has not been cleared to visit this country to pass through our borders. The permit has been denied due to her morally degrading stage acts which include flaunting her nudity to the audience,” Makalamba said.

Minister of Tourism and Culture Michael Usi hit at the organisers of the show for playing tricks on the coming of Zodwa, who was billed to be the headliner of the event, and this followed a video that Zodwa posted saying she was coming but would dress decently and not perform.

“As a ministry, our mandate is that she should not undress, looking at what she does and that is what we told the organisers,” he said.

The minister also indicated that their not granting a permit to Zodwa was not about killing the industry or fighting the organisers but rather coming up with modalities.

He further said Zodwa was welcome to visit Malawi anytime but not for this event.

One of the members of the organising team Biggie Lu branded the ministry greedy through his Facebook page, adding that they were proceeding with the show with or without Zodwa Wabantu.

Biggie Lu added that other South African acts Vukani and Soul Barbie, plus his dancers, were coming to perform in the country with the exception of Zodwa Wabantu. The organisers have also released a list of local acts.

Zodwa makes waves for the fact that she performs without wearing underwear. She was banned in Zimbabwe and was also deported from Zambia due to the nature of her performances.
