Local Chelsea fans donate to the elderly

A group of local Chelsea supporters on Saturday donated 100 blankets worth K650,000 to the elderly from Traditional Authority Kapeni in Blantyre.

The group, known as Chelsea Malawi Supporters Club, said this was part of celebrating their team’s triumph in the Uefa Champions League.

One of the representatives of the fans Themu Ndaluza Banda said older people lack many things, hence the gesture.

“The elderly are always at the receiving end of this cold season because they have nobody to look up to for support. That is why we decided to address this challenge. We also wanted to teach fellow football fans that through sports we can reach out to the underprivileged,” Banda said.

One of the elderly Ekileni Jasi was grateful for the gifts.

“God should continue blessing these people. I have received two blankets; one for me and another for my grandchild. This is good news to me because we are often neglected by the society. I urge others to follow suit,” Jasi said.

Malawi Network of Older Persons Organisations Programmes Officer Ketrina Mhango hailed the group for donating to the elderly.

The group has a registered membership of about 300 fans across the country.
