Chief Secretary to government George Mkondiwa has said he is tired of the growing trend where people are defrauding influential people by impersonating him.
“It is necessary that the people should know or should double-check when they are contacted by these impersonators,” said Mkondiwa in an interview on Tuesday.
He said there is a group that has been posing as him and inviting people to his office or to meet him at Ryalls, Mount Soche or Crossroads hotels.
The Chief Secretary said such conmen usually say the President sent them to discuss the development of the country.
“In the scheme of things, they always refer to Inkosi ya Mmakhosi Mbelwa as another person that will be joining those meetings and, subsequently, they tell the person that they should deposit some money for fuel for the Mzimba chief,” Mkondiwa said.
He said some people have fallen victim to the traps, while others have sent airtime.
“I managed to report them to police who arrested a couple that was doing this. But regrettably, the trend is continuing. Just today (Tuesday) someone from MUST [Malawi University of Science and Technology] called me to say I had talked to him and asked him to deposit to an account K30, 000 for fuel for Inkosi Mmbelwa for a meeting that we were supposed to hold at Ryalls Hotel,” Mkondiwa explained.
Last month, police announced that they had identified a couple based in Area 25 in Lilongwe that was involved in the malpractice.
