After rolling out Fast- Five hockey recently, Hockey Association of Malawi (Ham) launches an In-door Hockey League’s fourth edition at College of Medicine Sports Complex in Blantyre Saturday.

Ham general secretary, Chigo Thindwa, said this year’s league would revert to six-aside format after using the five-aside last season.

“In-door hockey continues to grow from season-to-season in its competitiveness and skill-building for the hockey fraternity. Last season it registered 420 goals for the men’s league compared to 250 goals in the previous year. For the women’s league, it was a total of 112 goals scored compared to 101 goals in the previous season,” Thindwa said.

As of yesterday, eight men’s teams and five ladies’ teams had confirmed participation in the league which is yet to secure sponsorship.

“It is Ham’s hope that there can finally be a cash prize for the winners. The men’s and ladies’ leagues have received support in terms of trophies and medals from Ham and other well-wishers in the past,” Thindwa said.

In preparation for the league, Ham held an umpires’ course last year and last December umpires— James Bandawe and Ulemu Ngwira— officiated In-door tournaments in Durban, South Africa.

Genetrix are defending both the men’s and ladies’ titles. On the world stage, International Hockey Federation (IHF) has also reverted to six-aside format this year.
