Indoor court project to commence soon

Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture says it in the final stages of identifying a contractor of the long awaited indoor sports complex to be constructed at Njamba Freedom Park in Blantyre.

Spokesperson for the ministry Simon Mbvundula confirmed Friday that all processes were at advanced stage.

“We are in the final stages of procuring a contractor for Indoor Sports Complex,” Mbvundula said in a brief written response.

However, Mbvundula could not divulge more details on how many contractors submitted bids for the project.

A total of 20 contractors submitted bids for the construction of Nyasa Big Bullets and Be Forward Wanderers.

President Peter Mutharika is today expected to preside over the ground breaking ceremony for Bullets and Nomads stadia.

Once completed, the complex will be the first of its kind in the country. The facility is expected to have netball, basketball and volleyball courts, shops and offices for some association such as Netball Association of Malawi (Nam).

In the 2019/ 2020 National Budget, a total of K200 million was allocated for preliminary works of the project. Former Nam sponsors, Rach Family Trust promised to construct an indoor netball court estimated at K2 billion when signing the K600 million sponsorship contract but the deal failed.

Former president late Bingu wa Mutharika promised to build the state-of-the art netball court in 2009 but the project never started.
