Inexperience cost Malawi Under-20
South Africa-based Russian veteran coach, Viktor Bondarenko, has observed that inexperience cost Malawi Under-20 National Football Team at the Cosafa Youth Championship currently underway in South Africa.
Bondarenko said this on the sidelines of the tournament at Moruleng Stadium in North West Province where the Junior Flames exited the tournament with no goal and no win in three games.
Bondarenko has, for decades, coached top teams such as Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns in South Africa’s Premier Soccer League.
“It has been a good tournament. I have seen a lot of talented players from the Malawi team. I do not want to be specific, but the only thing is that this team lacks experience,” he said.
“With more games, you can have a strong team for the future. Overall, it has been a good tournament.”
The Junior Flames’ coach Gerald Phiri, also hoped that his charges would continue participating in more international competitions.
Malawi drew 0-0 against Zimbabwe, lost 3-0 to Zambia before succumbing 0-1 to the Democratic Republic of Congo to bow out of the competition.
However, the Junior Flames were still able to win the hearts of some neutrals.
