Initiative to professionalise sports in the country

FOR NEW APPROACH— Kanjala speaks during the event

By Isaac Salima:

Malawi Olympic Committee (Moc) former president Oscar Kanjala has launched a consulting firm SportCol aimed at professionalising sports issues in the country.

Speaking during the launch Tuesday in Blantyre, Kanjala said the firm targets all sports disciplines by changing the narrative.

“We would like to change how sports has been run in the country by making it more professional. We would like to start with how sports organisations have been managing themselves and athletes. We will also work with sponsors and partners with the primary purpose of changing how everything has been run in the country,” Kanjala, who is SportCol Team Leader, said.

He said the new approach will help athletes win medals in competitions.

He said the initiative will ensure that they tackle all areas where there have been gaps which have been standing on the country’s sports progress.

Moc Board Member Andrew Mkwezalamba described the initiative as a positive step in the promotion of sports in the country.

“There have been gaps in our athletes’ performances. We have to look at their performances before and after the games. We have to start preparing our athletes using scientific methods and I hope that the coming in of this firm will bridge that gap,” Mkwezalamba said.
