Inter trade fair returns July 28

PETE—All is set

Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI) has announced that the 32nd International Trade Fair will be held from July 28 to August 7 2022 at the Trade Fair Grounds in Blantyre.

The event returns after a two-year break due to restriction imposed by the government on social gatherings stemming from the Covid pandemic.

Making the announcement at a press briefing on Thursday, MCCCI Head of Business Linkages and Events Linda Pete said there is excitement among business players evidenced by the number of bookings made for the event.

She said 203 pavilion spaces have already been booked, surpassing the 167 participants recorded during the last event in 2019.

She further said business players from the international community are also expressing interest in participating in this year’s event, with Mozambique, Zimbabwe and India already confirming their participation.

“The theme for this year’s event is ‘Achieving Business Resilience through Market Diversity’. This theme has been proposed on the basis that Malawi, as an open economy, has historically experienced negative trade balances mainly due to worsening terms of trade for its exports, which are mostly unprocessed agriculture products, and lack of industrialisation.

“The dependency on a few markets for its exports and critical imports such as inputs and raw materials for industry has recently proven to be a further strain on the economy. This calls upon businesses to diversify markets for their products and sources of supplies of their critical imports such as raw materials,” Pete said.

President Lazarus Chakwera is expected to officially open this year’s International Trade Fair.
