Minister of Tourism, Wildlife and Culture Michael Usi has called for youth involvement in the promotion of culture in the country.

Usi’s sentiments came barely a day after President Lazarus Chakwera echoed the same call on Saturday during Umthetho Cultural Festival at Hora Mountain in Mzimba.
‘‘In Mulanje like any other district, we have so many traditional dances so; my coming here is to call upon you to take a lead role in promoting and preserving culture and also relay the message from the president that we need to promote cultural tourism through dances, food and other elements,” he said.
He said the country has several traditional dances that need to be promoted and called upon people in Mulanje to bring to light its traditional dances and local dishes among others.
The minister, who is also an artist, said politics should not bring division among people but instead unite them in using culture to promote tourism.
He said youth need not be side-lined in promotion of culture and that they need to be utilised to the fullest.
Senior Chief Chikumbu assured the minister that as traditional leaders; they will work hand in hand with the youth as well as enlighten them on the importance of culture.
‘‘As traditional leaders, we are the custodians of culture so, what we are saying is that our children should know their culture so that they should not go astray,’’ Chikumbu said.
