IPMM asks government to expedite bill

The Institute of People Management Malawi (IPMM) has asked the government to speed up the enactment of the IPMM Bill.

IPMM President, Chrispin Chikwama, said the bill, if enacted into law, will help to legitimise people managers, thereby, regulating the profession in terms of the required standards.

Chikwama made the appeal at the weekend during this year’s dinner and dance held at Sunbird Mount Soche Hotel in Blantyre, where the guest of honour was the Attorney General, Kalekeni Kaphale.

“We are definitely growing, but the main challenge is that we are just an association, so people join voluntarily. Let me ask you Attorney General [Kaphale] to assist in ensuring that the necessary steps are taken by the government to have the bill enacted,” Chikwama  said.

According to Chikwama, who is also the Human Resources Manager for Illovo Sugar Malawi Limited, the piece of legislation will have a number of benefits including widening the membership and consequently increasing the financial base.

The draft bill is currently with the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs.

“I understand that you have a draft copy of legislation which you intend to lobby for enactment into law to govern the activities of the profession. So as the Ministry of Justice we will help formulate or reformulate the bill before passing it on to Parliament for consideration.

“But I am pleased and encouraged for the initiative which will advance the profession in Malawi,” said Kaphale.

The Attorney General said people managers play an important role in any economy and in Malawi economy particular, they are the major resource hence the need to have well trained and qualified managers.

During the event, five members received membership certificates for joining the institute this year.

IPMM, which has 250 paid up members, is a professional body for practitioners in people management and training.
