President Lazarus Chakwera has identified irregularities in reports which Covid clusters have filed to the Presidential Taskforce on Covid (PTC) outlining how they spent the first K6.2 billion tranche of funding.

In a statement, the President’s Press Secretary Brian Banda says PTC members are working on the reports now.

“Now that the reports have been duly submitted to the President’s Taskforce on Covid, the taskforce is scrutinising each report line-by-line and interrogating the head of each cluster to ascertain apparent irregularities.

“Once the President and his taskforce are done scrutinising the submitted reports, His Excellency will address the nation regarding determination on the matter,” the statement reads.

On Sunday, Chakwera gave heads of Covid fight clusters 48 hours to outline how they spent the K6.2 billion government allocated to them to aid the fight against Covid.

There have been calls from Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) and opposition Democratic Progressive Party for the Department of Disaster Management Affairs, which is at the heart of the Covid fight, to account for the funds.

HRDC Chairperson Gift Trapence said he would wait for the reports and comment on the issue after going through them.
