Isaac Chilemba faces defining moment
Malawi’s celebrated light heavyweight boxer, Isaac Chilemba, faces a defining moment of his career when he takes on Australian Blake Caparello in a vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) and World Boxing Association Oceania International light heavyweight title bout Friday afternoon.
The winner of the bout, which is scheduled for Melbourne Pavilion, will inch closer to the top rankings of the WBC light heavyweight category and challenge for world titles.
For the Blantyre-born Chilemba, this fight presents him an opportunity to redeem his career as he has been out of action since 2016 when he broke his arm during a fight.
In an interview from Melbourne Thursday, Chilemba admitted that the bout was a must-win.
“I am really looking forward to the fight and becoming a champion again. Weigh-in has been done. I weighed 79.30 kilogrammes and Blake was 79.10 kilogrammes. All went well and I feel great. I cannot wait for the fight,” he said.
Chilemba, 24-5-2, 10 Kos, has also lost in three consecutive fights and at 30, he is not getting younger.
Caparello (26-2-1, 10 Kos) is an equally good puncher. The boxers are friends and sparring partners but they will put that aside and go for glory in Melbourne.
Chilemba is ranked 13th on the WBC light heavyweight category whereas Caparello is ninth.
