Israel Kam’mwamba loses in Nigeria
Budding lightweight boxer Israel K am’mwamba’s mission to claim the Commonwealth Africa title ended in defeat on Sunday.
Kam’mwamba lost to Nigerian Otto Joseph, who was declared the Commonwealth Africa lightweight champion after winning on unanimous points’ decision at National Indoor Surulere Stadium in Lagos.
In the 10-round bout monitored on Supersport Television channel 209, all three judges scored in favour of the Nigerian 97-94, 98-92 and 97-92. Joseph is unbeaten in nine bouts.
During the fight, the 23-year-old Malawian showcased good combinations but he failed to connect punches and score points.
In contrast, Joseph was defensive and opted to counter Kam’mwamba’s punches with body shots.
From round seven, it was obvious that both boxers were exhausted as they spent most of the time grabbing each other.
Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board spokesperson, Frank Chibisa, said Kam’mwamba could have done better with good preparations.
“Of course, by the time he got the offer, he was in camp preparing for a local fight. However, preparations do differ depending on a number of factors, including opponents’ record, age and the nature of a fight,” he said.
It is the first time that Kam’mwamba has lost in his professional career. He has eight wins, including five knockouts, a defeat and a draw.
