Issa Njauju murder suspect denied bail

The High Court in Lilongwe has refused to grant bail to a police officer who was arrested last month in connection with last year’s murder of Anti- Corruption Bureau (ACB) Director of Corporate Affairs, Issa Njauju.

The application, which Titus Thombozi filed through lawyer, Jabrie Zapinga, was heard on Wednesday last week.

But Judge Ivy Kamanga denied the suspect bail because the 90-day period given for investigations of murder cases, before trial have not elapsed.

Zapinga confirmed representing Thombozi on the issue of bail application only. He did not provide further details. However, lawyer Tione Namanja, from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) chambers confirmed the ruling.

“The judge said the state was within its legal limit of pre-trial custody. It is within the 90 days for such cases. As such, the judge denied the suspect bail,” Namanja said.

Thombozi, who was working at Mchinji Police Station was arrested mid last month.

Njauju was killed in July last year.

About three months ago, the national police headquarters said the police had been meeting hurdles in the investigations because the killers seemed to have been sophisticated.

One Frank John who was arrested after being found in possession of Njauju’s mobile phone is still remanded at Maula Prison while a police officer who was also arrested after he allegedly claimed he knew Njauju’s killers, was granted bail.
