Jakobo awaits government on India trip
By Sam Banda Jnr:
Veteran actor and comedian Eric Mabedi, popularly known as Jakobo, said Thursday he is waiting for the government to undergo a kidney transplant in India.
Mabedi, who is undergoing dialysis at Mwaiwathu Hospital in Blantyre, is in urgent need of a kidney transplant and needs K20 million to travel to India.
Friends of Eric Mabedi sounded an SOS calling on well-wishers to help the veteran actor, who is also Kwathu Drama Group Director and National Theatre Association of Malawi (Ntam) President.
Friends of Eric Mabedi spokerperson, Higger Mkandawire, said they want to make sure that the veteran actor leaves for India this month.
Mabedi hailed those who have come forward to support him.
“I would like to thank all those who have come forward since an SOS was sounded. I am very grateful. At the moment, we are waiting for the government,” he said.
Mabedi said he has submitted his report through his doctor at Mwaiwathu.
“The donor of the kidney is available and all the passports are ready and so we are just waiting for communication from the government,” he said.
Ministry of Health spokesperson, Joshua Malango, said recently that the government will help the veteran actor.
Malango further said the government, through the ministry, was communicating with Mabedi and family and all those involved.
Meanwhile, a fundraising show which Ntam held in Lilongwe last weekend, raised K122,000.
