James Chiutsi elected into regional body

Malawi Paralympic Committee (MPC) Chairperson, James Chiutsi, has been elected to a similar post for the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 committee.

Chiutsi was elected chairperson of AUSC Sport for People With Disabilities committee (SPDW) during a meeting held in Manzini, Swaziland last Wednesday.

Another Malawian—Justice Zione Ntaba—was also elected Chairperson of the Women in Sports Committee.

“While I am responsible for ensuring that sports for people with disabilities develop in the region, Zione is expected to see that women are participating in different sports and winning medals,” Chiutsi said.

“Immediately, we set out five priority areas that we need to work on to develop SPWD in this region, these are ‘to work on capacity building for both administrative and technical officials, introduce long-term athletes and coach development.”

During the same meeting, Jobo Raswoko of Lesotho was elected Vice Chairperson of the committee with Buyile Shongwe voted as Secretary.

AUSC Region 5 is the sports arm of the African Union charged with using sports as a vehicle for achieving peace, integration and unity in Africa.

The region comprises Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Angola, Lesotho, Botswana and Swaziland.
