James Keene’s arrival complicates Gerald Phiri Jnr stay at Bidvest
The possibility of James Keene signing for Bidvest Wits will complicate Gerald Phiri Jnr’s stay at the South African club as the Malawian midfielder remains ‘on hold’ and still to be registered.
Phiri was signed in July but has not been registered yet due to work permit issues and KickOff. com has now picked up that if English striker Keene does well enough to earn a contract, then it could present challenges for the club.
Wits have already registered four foreign players with the Premier Soccer League (PSL) namely Papy Faty, Wangu Gome, Kris Bright and Joaquim Lupeta and have only one foreign space remaining.
If Keene earns a contract then the club must make a call on who to register between the Englishman and the Malawian with an option that one could then be loaned out in January instead of sitting on the stands until the end of the season.
Wits CEO Jose Ferreira confirms that they are still working on Phiri’s paperwork but they will only be able to make a decision at the end of the month.
“We should have everything sorted out at the end of the month but he [Phiri] remains with the club,” Ferreira said.
Meanwhile, Phiri Jnr is in Flames camp ahead of the Cecafa Cup starting November 21 to December 6.—Kick-Off
