Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) Chairperson, Jane Ansah, has assured electoral stakeholders that they will process and certify only vote results that match in figures and words.
She said this during the morning press briefing at the main tally centre at Comesa Hall in Blantyre yesterday, amid reports that some results sheets from polling centres have conflicting figures and words.
“The preliminary results we are announcing are only from results that have no queries. We are not including results where figures of votes cast do not tally with numbers put down in words.
“By the way, in cases where this has been observed, the trend is that it is affecting candidates who are getting very small numbers of votes. In other cases, there is a juxtaposition of results, where results for one candidate are indicated against the name of another candidate. We are working on these issues,” she said.
She further urged the media not to take social media posts as authentic, saying it was important to verify any social media reports by crosschecking documents that have information on elections.
“That is why we are distributing hard copies of results to all political party representatives. We want them to verify reports by crosschecking documents provided to them so that, in case of any observations, we are informed and work on issues together,” she said.
