Japan to fund Tedzani Power Station expansion
Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) says the Japanese government will fund the expansion project of the Tedzani Hydro Power Plant whose works will start in 2016 and be completed in 2018 to add 22 megawatts to the country’s power grid.
The governments of Malawi and Japan already signed an agreement for the project last year through which K418 million will be injected in the expansion of the hydropower station at Tedzani Intake.
The company says preparations for the project are at an advanced stage and that a contractor, Mota Engil, is already on site and is currently closing the gates that control water in order to create a dry area to allow for the Japanese engineers to carry out their work.
Tedzani Power Station senior mechanical maintenance engineer, Resten Muriya, told The Daily Times in an interview that the maintenance work that is taking place at Tedzani Intake will help improve power generation at the station.
“The maintenance here is in two parts, the first phase is being done by Mota Engil to extend the guide rails that will help close doors on the shire river as we prepare for the construction of new power station,” said Muriya.
He said the blackouts prevailing in the country are partly a result of the work being undertaken at the station and are meant to create space for the maintenance work.
