Malawi National Football Team captain John Banda single-handedly inspired UD Songo to their first-ever Mozambique Super Cup when he scored a brace in a 2-0 victory over Ferroviario de Maputo in Maxixe on Saturday.

The victory comes just a week after Songo won the 2023 FCB Nyasa Bullets pre-season bonanza, where he featured in two matches.

Banda, who is set to join the Flames’ Saudi Arabia camp in preparation for back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Egypt, said he was over the moon with the historic achievement.

“I am excited with my contribution to the team’s success. I will live to remember this great achievement in the team’s history. To God be all the glory,” he said.

Banda is enjoying a season of his life after also helping Songo to win the Mocambola League last season.

He remains the most consistent Flames player in Mozambique.

Elsewhere, former Moyale Barracks striker Lloyd Njaliwa continued with his impressive form in Mozambique when he scored for Costa do Sol in a 3-1 win over Maputo Sports League in a pre-season match.

Njaliwa and compatriots Richard Mbulu, Yamikani Chester and Chikoti Chirwa have all made an instant impact at the former Mocambola League champions with their outstanding performances.

The Flames quartet has been scoring goals in pre-season matches for Costa, inspiring hope that they will be instrumental in helping the team reclaim glory.

Chester said he was hoping for a good debut season in the neighbouring country.

“Everything is going on well here as we continue with our preparations for the new season,” he said.

Other Malawians plying their trade in Mozambique are Paul Kansungwi and Bashir Maunde, who are playing for another Mozambican side Ferraviario de Nampula.
