TNM Super League giants, Nyasa Big Bullets have named defender John Lanjesi as the club’s new captain, replacing Chiukepo Msowoya who joined South Africa’s Golden Arrows.

Another defender Yamikani Fodya will deputise Lanjesi, who on Thursday confirmed his appointment.

“I am humbled. I don’t take it for granted. I did not expect it because I know Bullets have a lot of good players capable of leading the team,” Lanjesi said.

Bullets experienced defender George Nyirenda welcomed Lanjesi’s appointment.

“Before the coach made the choice, he gave the opportunity for the players to do so and they failed. He eventually made his choice and that is why the players support the coach’s decision,” Nyirenda explained.

It is Lanjesi’s second season at the People’s Team. Bullets have other senior players such as Fischer Kondowe, Pilirani Zonda, Bashir Maunde and Henry Kabichi. Zonda was among the deputy skippers last season.

Bullets Coach, Nsanzurwimo Ramadhan, could not be reached on Thursday.

But Bullets Trustees Genera Secretary, Jim Kalua, confirmed the choice of Lanjesi. The defender is experienced and can play as either a centre back or right back.

The captaincy is a big issue at clubs such as Bullets, Be Forward Wanderers and Silver Strikers.

Inside sources said that some Bullets senior players are not happy with the choice of Lanjesi.

Lanjesi moved to Bullets from Civo United on a two-year deal alongside fellow defender Emmanuel Zoya.

He spent the better part of last season on the sidelines due to an injury. Lanjesi was on the verge of joining Polokwane City FC in South Africa but the deal flopped.
