Royal AM’s Malawian coach John Maduka has been nominated for the 2021-22 DStv Premiership Coach-of-the-Season Award.
South Africa’s Premier Soccer League (PSL) announced the list of nominees Thursday.
Maduka faces strong competition for the award from the Mamelodi Sundowns duo of Manoba Mngqithi and Rulani Mokwena, and Cape Town City’s Eric Tinkler.
This is the first time for the former Flames midfielder to be nominated for the award in his coaching career.
Maduka was voted Coach-of-the-Month for February after guiding Royal to 11 points from five matches in that period.
Royal are third on the log table with 46 points from 28 matches, three points behind second-placed Cape Town City, who have played 29 matches.
The KwaZulu-Natal-based side can qualify for a Caf Champions League slot should they win their remaining matches against Sundowns and Orlando Pirates.
Former Malawi National Football Team coach Meck Mwase praised Maduka for raising the bar for Malawian coaches.
“Maduka has proved that Malawi coaches have the capacity to do well if properly supported. The DStv Premiership is one of the best leagues in Africa and he has performed beyond expectations,’’ Mwase said.
Royal striker Victor Letsoalo has been nominated for the prestigious 2021-22 PSL Footballer-of-the-Season Award alongside the Sundowns duo of Andile Jali and Peter Shalulile.
South Africa-based Malawian players Gabadinho Mhango, Limbikani Mzava and Richard Mbulu have all missed out on the nomination after struggling for game time.
Mhango won the 2020 Golden Boot Award with 16 goals alongside Shalulile.
In South Africa’s second tier Glad Africa Championship, Flames striker Khuda Muyaba narrowly missed the golden boot award after scoring 15 goals, one behind winner Tiklas Thutlwa of Black Leopards.
